PageRank is a ranking algorithm used by the Google search engine to determine the importance or relevance of a web page. The algorithm was developed by Google co-founder Larry Page and is named after him. 

The basic idea behind PageRank is that a webpage is considered more important if it is linked to by other important webpages. The algorithm assigns a numerical score, or PageRank, to each page based on the number and quality of other pages that link to it. Pages with a higher PageRank are considered to be more important and are more likely to appear at the top of search engine results pages (SERPs).

The PageRank algorithm takes into account not only the number of links to a page but also the quality of those links. Links from pages with a high PageRank are given more weight than links from pages with a low PageRank. This makes it more difficult to manipulate the algorithm by simply creating a large number of low-quality links to a page.

PageRank is just one of many factors that Google considers when ranking web pages in its search results. Other factors include the relevance of the page's content to the search query, the quality of the page's content, and the overall user experience of the website.
